Fractions

The first two novels of Ken MacLeod's landmark modern science fiction space opera series, The Fall Revolution. "Ken MacLeod's novels are fast, funny, and sophisticated. There can never be enough books like these; he is writing revolutionary science fiction. A nova has appeared in our sky." —Kim Stanley Robinson Each readable on their own, but interconnected into a greater whole, the four novels of Ken MacLeod's Fall Revolution series redefined the scope of science fiction about the possible political futures of the human race. In The Star Fraction, Britain in the twenty-first century is a Balkanized mess. Moh Kohn is a security mercenary unaware that he holds the key to information that could change the world. Janis Taine is a scientist who needs Moh's help hiding from the U.S./U.N. Jordan Brown is a teenage refugee from an enclave of religious fundamentalists. And a rogue computer program is guiding events to a breathtaking conclusion . . . In The Stone Canal, life on New Mars is tough for humans, but death is only a minor inconvenience. The machines know their place, the free market rules all, and only the abolitionists object. Then a stranger arrives on New Mars, a clone who remembers living on Earth as Jonathan Wilde, the anarchist who was accused of losing World War III. Moving from twentieth-century Scotland through a tumultuous twenty-first century and outward to the stars, the novels of the Fall Revolution are idea-driven science fiction at its best, portraying futures where long lives, strange deaths, and unexpected knowledge await those who survive the wars and revolution to come. Both The Star Fraction and The Stone Canal won the Prometheus Award on their original publication. They are followed by The Cassini Division and the British Science Fiction Association Award–winning The Sky Road. "Formidably intelligent and extraordinarily original." —Tom Shippey on The Star Fraction "There is more than a hint of heroic ethic here, though the hero in question may be more like Milton's Satan than Captain Future. As much fun as these books provide, it's that fierceness, that seriousness of purpose, that powers their engines and makes me want to read on." —Locus on The Stone Canal
