Serving Up Passion

It had been a long day for Joni. After hours of practice on the court, she couldn’t wait to get home and relax. She took a few pictures with fans, stepped into the car with her trainer, Mrs. Wiggins and splayed across her seat. “Wow, I thought that day would never end, ” Joni said.

Mrs. Wiggins gave her the look of a stern schoolteacher. “I don’t know how to tell you this, my dear, but days of extra practice are very important. How do you think Anna Sanchez stays on top?”

Rolling her eyes, Joni said, “Yes, I know, Mrs. Wiggins. Practice, practice, practice. ”

“That’s right. Where are you ranked among the female tennis players in the world, my dear?”

“Second, ” Joni groaned.

“And how will you get to number one?”

“Practice, practice, practice. ”

Mrs. Wiggins smiled. Joni did too, but only one of their smiles was sincere. It was times likes these that she regretted choosing the life of a tennis pro. But then again, it often didn’t feel like a choice at all. Ever since she was old enough to hold a racket, she was put out there on the court while her proud parents beamed…
