#1 I was sent to the Republic of South Vietnam in 1968, and I had every intention of spending my last dime sucking up every deranged fantasy I could while I was still breathing. By the time I got to Oakland, I didn’t have enough body fluids left to sweat properly.

#2 The 14-hour flight to Vietnam is a boring drudgery or drunken binge, depending on if you have money or not. NCOs can drink, but the lower enlisted swine are limited to two or three beers.

#3 I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One. With our ranks, we would have become platoon sergeants if we had been shanghaied. The members of this division emphasized the last word in their nickname; we, on the other hand, emphasized the second word.

#4 The author's warning bells were ringing as he heard Bernie describe how he had gotten all the cherries freed from their infantry assignment. This was an SF assignment, because anything that would get you away from the Division press gangs had to have some heavy priority.
