#1 I realized I didn’t look happy in the mirror. I was stuck at the same sports bar every Saturday with friends who talked about stuff I didn’t care about. I had just broken off an engagement, and I was not respecting myself or my body.

#2 I had never realized how important community was for my health and happiness. I had been a part of a children’s nutrition education media company, Super Sprowtz, which helped inspire kids to eat their vegetables. But I had also seen how technology impacted the way kids connected with one another, as well as how it made them more sedentary and isolated.

#3 I believe that the need to belong is a fundamental human need. It is a basic human need that affects not just our emotional well-being but our physical well-being too.

#4 Community is the unifying ingredient that binds all four levels of my updated hierarchy of needs. Without a community supporting you at each level, it’s nearly impossible to move up the hierarchy.
