ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez tells the story of Civil Townsend, a nurse in 1970s Alabama who becomes involved with the Williams family. The narrative focuses on the injustices of involuntary sterilization and the ethical dilemmas faced by medical professionals. As Civil works at a family planning clinic, she discovers that the new birth control shot Depo-Provera is being administered to young, poor, black girls, like the Williams sisters. This discovery sets her on a path to fight for justice, while simultaneously questioning her own role and culpability in the situation. The book explores themes of race, class, medical ethics, and the complexities of good intentions, while not revealing what happens at the end of the story.
