#1 When something is actually necessary, the for now psychology does not come into play at all. In a way, the keep-for-now response is like the Recycle bin on a computer. If you send a document to the Recycle bin, it’s no longer in front of you. But it hasn’t really disappeared. It’s still on the hard drive.

#2 Don’t keep things for now if you really want to get rid of them. If you receive a gift of food, take it out of its box and place it somewhere where it can be eaten. The more fancy the box, the more likely people are to leave the food inside.

#3 The problem with temporary items is that they never get moved or used. They accumulate, and soon your space is completely taken over by them.

#4 When we're surrounded by so much stuff, this careless temporary storage becomes dangerous. It makes it more difficult to get rid of things and to find important things when necessary. We have to be firm and make decisions now.
