#1 Reiki, the healing system, has been used and taught in the West since the late 1930s. It was said that Dr. Mikao Usui was a learned scholar who taught in a Christian seminary. He was challenged by one of his students, who asked him if he believed in the Bible stories of Jesus’s healing, and when were they going to be taught how to heal.

#2 Mrs. Takata, the founder of Reiki, had a system of teaching Reiki that survives to this day. She taught the four Reiki symbols, and how to use Reiki for healing. She also taught the three levels of Reiki training, and how to transfer the healing ability to others.

#3 The Western tradition of Reiki was established in 1982, when a group of Mrs. Takata’s Masters met in Hawaii to discuss how Reiki should progress. They agreed on how the system should be taught and the exact form of each of the four Reiki symbols.

#4 The full history of Reiki was revealed in the late 1990s, when new information came from Japan. It was revealed that Dr. Usui had been a Buddhist priest, not a Christian priest, and that he had passed his complete teachings on to 17 people, not just Chujiro Hayashi.
