Les Misérables

'Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.'

Often regarded as one of the greatest novels of the twenty-first century, Les Misérables has been adapted several times across film, television and the stage, including the hugely successful musical of the same name.

A sweeping epic set in nineteenth-century France on the cusp of revolution, Les Misérables charts the entwined lives of a rich cast of characters. Hugo begins with the story of Jean Valjean, a former convict seeking redemption after nineteen years in prison. Pursued relentlessly by Inspector Javert, Valjean's narrative takes the reader on a poignant journey of poverty, injustice and hope – as seen with the tragic tale of Valjean's former employee Fantine, her daughter, Cosette, and the idealistic Marius. An extraordinary and profoundly moving tale, Les Misérables expertly explores the meaning of love, sacrifice and the enduring power of grace. This audiobook edition is beautifully read by David Rintoul. Victor Hugo (1802 – 1885) was a French poet, essayist, playwright, journalist and human rights activist. Known for championing the Romantic movement in France, Hugo's writing often revolved around the political and social issues of his time. His most famous works include Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
