"Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."

Resurrection, one of Leo Tolstoy's later works, is a powerful exploration of personal morality, the possibility of redemption, and the profound impact of one's choices on others.

Privileged nobleman Dmitri Nekhlyudov, called to jury service, is astonished to see in the dock, charged with murder, a young woman whom he once seduced and abandoned, propelling her into prostitution. Realising the part he played in the life of degradation she has been forced to lead, Nekhludov's determination to make amends pitches him into a hellish labyrinth of Russian courts, prisons and bureaucracy, in which the author loses no opportunity for satire and bitter criticism of a state system of cruelty and injustice. As he grapples with his feelings of responsibility and guilt, Nekhludov embarks on a transformative journey that challenges his perceptions of morality and justice, gaining a deeper understanding of his faith and the importance of genuine compassion towards others. Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, and social reformer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time. He is best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, both celebrated for their intricate character development and profound exploration of moral dilemmas and human nature. In his later years, Tolstoy experienced a spiritual awakening which led him to reject materialism and embrace a life of simplicity, seeking to align his life with his beliefs about non-violence and compassion. Tolstoy's legacy endures not only through his literary masterpieces but also through his profound impact on literature and philosophy.
