SILK COTTON
Lovers of Caribbean literature will certainly enjoy this brilliant and entertaining collection. These stories incorporate the culture, folklore and joy of Caribbean life into a delightful pot pourri of insights and experiences. They also reveal the yearnings, the insecurities and the determination of the characters portrayed.
“Silk Cotton” meshes folklore with the personal tragedy of forbidden love relationships while “The passing of Edward Athelston Birch” explores some of the more subtle and surprising outcomes that spring from interracial relationships. “She gone”, a 2024 bronze medal winner in the Barbados National Independence Festival of Creative Arts treats the declaration of republican status for that country in a unique and entertaining way. “The Man and the Cow” takes a sympathetic look at a victim of mental illness.
A constant source of fascination and entertainment for our Caribbean people is the maneuverings of the political elite. “The Phone” offers some insights into the behind the scenes infighting that occurs within the party structure.
As a tribute to the late Charles B Ward, the author’s big brother, his beautiful singing voice is used to good effect between passages in “Love, Lorna” and “The Passing” .
If you enjoyed this collection please check out Arnold Ward’s other audiobooks: “The Wire won’t Bend” and “Home for Christmas”.
