Some trips never end when the ship lands. Byron came back from Mars with a pension, a contract, and a set of pills meant to keep the past from leaking into the present. He drinks too much, wanders too close to borders he isn’t allowed to cross, and tries not to think about five other men whose names still live in his muscles. The world insists he’s free, but freedom comes with rules, zones, and careful supervision.

The memories don’t arrive all at once. They slip in through smells, sounds, a stranger’s cough, a tune half-heard over bar noise. Six men lived for months in a space smaller than comfort allows, under conditions that stripped away privacy, patience, and mercy. What couldn’t be acted on then was stored away, waiting. Now Byron is being told those stored impulses can be drained, replayed, and cured—if he’s willing to endure them again, one controlled session at a time.

The Hated is not about the journey to Mars. It’s about what followed the journey, and the price of returning heroes safely to civilian life. As therapy promises release from restrictions, Byron must decide whether healing means forgetting, or finally finishing something that was postponed too long.

Frederik Pohl wrote The Hated during a period when spaceflight was still theoretical but its human costs were already being imagined. Pohl had worked as an editor at Galaxy Science Fiction and published widely in magazines such as Astounding, Galaxy, and If. His fiction often placed ordinary professionals inside systems that claimed to protect them while quietly narrowing their choices, and this story stands as one of his most unsettling examinations of that tension.
