The potato had become the cornerstone of Irish agriculture by the early 19th century. Its ability to grow in Ireland's challenging soil and its high nutritional value made it the ideal crop for the majority of the population. Potatoes provided an inexpensive, calorie-dense food source that sustained not only the rural laborers but also their families.
