The Peddler

Could a small wooden figure hold the power to kill? The power to save a life? The magic to come alive?

In a city full of gangsters, thieves, and abusers, where cops can be as corrupt as criminals, fate brings those in need of help to the makeshift table of an old, blind peddler who carves tiny wooden figures of mighty warriors.

On the street between a bustling city and a lush park, there is little justice. Here sits the peddler and his table of carved figures. Nichelle, an internal affairs detective, gets pulled into this neighborhood as crime after crime goes unsolved. Those behind everything would rather see her dead than risk exposure, but when she digs for clues, she finds the peddler.

In this gritty, atmospheric urban fantasy, magic does not announce itself. But when danger comes for Nichelle, she finds there are forces at work that she can’t explain. Does fate favor the innocent? Or is there more to the peddler than meets the eye…

A fast read with the dark, atmospheric weight of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, the gritty noir of Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim, and the thought-provoking quagmire of a Black Mirror episode. If you relish urban fantasy with a dash of mystery and horror, then you won’t want to miss this standalone novelette in the Omens from the Aether anthology series.
