Maxan, a young fox, serves his city as a spy, scout, and informant. His function is to observe and report on the enemies of his city; however, Maxan defies his orders to stop an enemy from committing an unspeakable evil. He is now tied to a weapon of immeasurable power, capable of driving every animal into a mad killing frenzy.

Desperate for answers, Maxan is drawn into an eternal war between the Monitors — an ancient and dwindling order that has pledged to safeguard the long dormant artifacts hidden deep below and far above their world — and The Mind, the cult that seeks to use such devices to control the world.

Immune to the weapon that he now holds, Maxan must use it uncover the secrets of his world and find a better path for all animalkind. Will that path reveal him to be a puppet, a puppeteer, or perhaps something perhaps more…
