इङ्ग्लेण्ड्देशे केण्ट्नामकस्य प्रदेशस्य समुद्रतीरे महतः चण्डमारुतस्य कारणेन काचन बृहती नौका पीड्यमाना नुद्यमाना भग्नप्राया अभवत् । समुद्रतीरस्य जनसम्मर्दे केनचित् महनीयेन सह पालितः कश्चन बलशाली अप्रतिमशूरः धीरश्च शुनकः आसीत् । शुनकस्य स्वामी किञ्चित् चिन्तयित्वा नौकारक्षणाय एकम् उपायं कृत्वा शुनकं प्रेषयति । शुनकस्य साहाय्येन सर्वे नाविकाः तीरं प्राप्नुवन्ति । कथम् इति जिज्ञासया कथां शृणुमः ।

In the country of England, at a place called Kent, a large ship was severely damaged and almost destroyed due to a great storm. On the shore, there was a powerful and brave dog. After thinking for a while, the dog's owner devised a plan to save the ship and sent the dog for help. With the dog's assistance, all the sailors were able to reach the shore safely. Now, we will hear the story of how this happened.

आहो, साहसम्

काचन वृद्धा गृहस्य पार्श्वे स्थितस्य कूपस्य जलम् आनीय दैनन्दिनकार्याणि निर्वर्तयति स्म । भैरवनामा कश्चन दुष्टः वृद्धायाः‌ कूपः मदीयः इति प्रतिपादयन् तस्य उपयोगम् आरब्धवान् । खिन्नया वृद्धया राज्ञि निवेदिते कथं राजा चातुर्येण न्यायनिर्णयं करोति इति शृणुमः । तेनैव राज्ञा रणजितसिंहेन अमृतसरसि सुवर्णालयः निर्मितः ।

कूपः कस्य ?

भूतपूर्वराष्ट्रपतिः मान्यः के आर् नारायणन्वर्यः बाल्यकाले सर्वदा शालां प्रति विलम्बेन आगच्छति स्म यतः सः प्रतिदिनं मातुः साहाय्यं कृत्वा अष्ट कि.मी. दूरतः पादाभ्यामेव आगच्छति स्म । किन्तु पठने सः अन्ये छात्राः इव एव आसीत् । एकदा विलबेन आगतवन्तं तं अध्यापकः तर्जयित्वा कक्ष्यायां प्रवेष्टुं न अनुमतवान् । बालः म्लानमुखः सन् कक्ष्यातः बहिः तिष्ठन् कक्ष्यायां बोधितान् सर्वान् अंशान् पुस्तके लिखितवान् । एतत् दृष्ट्वा नितरां सन्तुष्टः अध्यापकः तस्य विलबस्य कारणं ज्ञात्वा दयार्द्रः जातः ।

The former President, Shri K. R. Narayanan, was often late for school as a child because he helped his mother and walked 8 km to school. However, he was just like the other students in his studies. One day, when he was late, the teacher scolded him and didn’t let him enter the class. The boy, looking sad, stood outside and wrote down all the lessons in his book. Seeing this, the teacher, pleased with his dedication, became kind-hearted after learning the reason for his delay.

पठने आसक्तिः

कश्चन मुसल्मानः रसखानः गुरुणा सह मक्कामदीनायात्रार्थं प्रस्थिते मध्यमार्गे वृन्दावनं प्राप्तवान् । यमुनानद्याम् आसन्नायां सुमधुरः वेणुध्वनिः तस्य मनः पूर्णतः अहरत् । तत्र सुन्दरः वृन्दावनाधीशः दृष्टिगोचरतां गतः । पुनः अदृश्यः जातः च । पुनर्दर्शनार्थं रसखानः दिनत्रयं निराहारं श्रीकृष्णनाम्नः जपं कृतवान् । तृतीयदिने रात्रौ भगवान् स्वयमेव आगत्य नैवेद्यरूपेण अर्पितं क्षीरान्नं आनीय स्वहस्ताभ्यां तं भोजितवान् । अग्रिमेषु दिनेषु रसखानस्य कृष्णभक्तत्वं सर्वत्र ख्यातं जातम् ।

A Muslim named Rasakhan, was traveling to Makkah along with his Guru. On the way, they reached Vrindavan. As they approached the Yamuna River, the sweet sound of a flute captured Rasakhan's heart. There, the beautiful Lord of Vrindavan appeared to him for a moment and disappeared. Wanting to see Him again, Rasakhan fasted for three days, chanting the name of Lord Krishna. On the third night, Lord Krishna appeared and fed Rasakhan with milk rice offered as naivedya. After that, Rasakhan's deep devotion to Lord Krishna became widely known.

कृष्णभक्तः रसखानः

दार्शनिकः कुमारिलभट्टः कदाचित् बौद्धदार्शनिकेन धर्मकीर्तिना पराजितः । तदा कुमारिलभट्टेन निश्चितं यत् बौद्धसिद्धान्ते तलस्पर्शि पाण्डित्यं प्राप्य एते बौद्धाः जेतव्याः इति । अग्रे सः वेदानां श्रेष्ठतां सयुक्तिकं प्रतिपाद्य बौद्धमतस्य दौर्बल्यं सप्रमाणं निरूपितवान् च । कुपिताः बौद्धाः 'यदि वेदाः प्रमाणं स्युः तर्हि पर्वतशिखरात् कूर्दनं क्रियताम्' इति वदन्ति । कुमारिलभट्टः वेदमातरं क्षणं ध्यात्वा सधैर्यम् अधः कूर्दितवान् च । अग्रे किमिति कथां श्रुत्वा जानन्तु ।

Kumarila Bhattaa, a highly learned philosopher in the field of Vedanta, was once defeated in a debate by the Buddhist philosopher Dharmakirti. After this defeat, he decided to study Buddhist philosophy thoroughly and prove its weaknesses in order to defeat it. Later, Kumarila Bhatta established the authority of the Vedas and demonstrated the flaws in the Buddhist system. The angry Buddhists mocked him, saying, "If the Vedas are truly authoritative, then jump from the peak of a mountain." वेदप्रामाण्यम्

'उद्यमेन हि सिद्ध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथै: । न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगा: ।।' - एतत् सुभाषितं बहु प्रसिद्धम् । काष्ठविक्रेतुः देवदत्तस्य स्वकार्ये प्रवृत्तिः कथं जाता इति बोधयन्ती इयं कथा एतस्य सुभाषितस्य उदाहरणं भवितुम् अर्हति इति पश्यामः ।

We all know the famous saying, 'उद्यमेन हि सिद्ध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथै: । न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगा: ।।' – 'Success is achieved through effort, not merely by wishful thinking.' This story illustrates how Devadatta, a wood seller, began to work with determination once again.

व्याघ्रायत

कश्चन अमेरिकीयः घण्टामात्रं कार्यं कृत्वा घण्टाद्वयस्य निमित्तं वेतनं प्राप्तुं नेच्छति । खिन्नः सः यदा मित्रं वदति तदा 'तद्विषये संस्था चिन्तयतु, शिष्टं समयं सुखेन यापयतु' इति वदति । तदा अमेरिकीयः वदति - ‘तेन संस्थायाः हानिः भवति । तेन देशस्य अर्थस्थितेः हानिः भवति । अतः देशस्य उन्नतिः साधनीया चेत् देशस्थैः सर्वैः कार्यसंस्कृतिविषये अवधानवद्भिः भवितव्यम् एव’ इति ।

A certain American did not wish to receive payment for two hours of work when he could finish it within an hour. Disturbed, he told this to a friend. His friend replied, 'Let the company worry about this, and you can spend the rest of the time comfortably.' The American then responded, 'This would result in the company's loss, which would, in turn, lead to a loss in the country's economy. Hence, everyone in the country must be mindful of the work ethic.

कार्यसंस्कृतिः

कदाचित् कश्चन राजा 'ईश्वरः कुत्र अस्ति' इत्यस्य प्रश्नस्य उत्तरं मासाभ्यन्तरे दातव्यम् इति सभायाम् आदिशति। चिन्ताक्रान्तेन मन्त्रिणा कश्चित् तीक्ष्णमतिः उत्तरं जानन् बालकः प्राप्तः । अनन्तरदिने राजस्थाने बालकः दर्शयति यत् कथं केवलेन दुग्धस्य आलोडनेन नवनीतं न भवति । आदौ क्षीरेण दधि करणीयम्, अनन्तरं दध्नः मथनात् नवनीतं प्राप्यते । तद्वदेव देवविषये अपि भक्तिं विना, त्यागतपस्यादिकं विना च भगवान् न् दृश्यते । तस्य दर्शनाय काचित् योग्यता सम्पादनीया इति । एतत् श्रुत्वा सुन्तुष्टः राजा तस्मै सहस्रं सुवर्णनाणकानि दत्तवान् ।

Once, a king asked the question, "Where is God?" and said he needed the answer within a month. The worried minister, one day, met a smart boy who claimed he knew the answer. The next day, the boy showed that just churning milk does not produce butter. First, the milk must become curd, and then by churning the curd, butter is made. Similarly, without devotion, one cannot see God. The king, pleased with the answer, gave the boy a thousand coins.

देवदर्शनाय योग्यता

कश्चित् वणिक् वाणिज्ये महतीं हानिम् अनुभूय भोजराजं प्रचुरं धनं ऋणरूपेण अयाचत "यावच्छक्यम् अस्मिन् जीवनकाले एव प्रत्यर्पयिष्यामि । यत् शिष्टं स्यात् तत् जन्मान्तरे प्रत्यर्पयिष्यामि" इति अवदत् च । गमनावसरे सायङ्काले सम्प्राप्ते कस्यचित् तिलकस्य गृहे न्यवसन्, रात्रौ बलीवर्दयोः सम्भाषणं श्रुतवान् । पशुभाषाभिज्ञः सः ज्ञातवान् यत् तौ द्वौ पूर्वस्मिन् जन्मनि एतस्मात् तिलकात् ऋणं स्वीकृतवन्तौ आस्ताम् । इह जन्मनि तैलपेषणीम् आवहन्तौ महता कष्टेन ऋणं प्रत्यर्पयन्तौ स्तः इति । अपरस्मिन् जन्मनि ऋणप्रत्यर्पणभारं वोढुं सर्वथा नेच्छन् सः वणिक्, भोजराजं सर्वं वृत्तान्तम् उक्त्वा, स्वीकृतं धनं प्रत्यर्पयत् ।

A certain merchant, who had suffered a loss, took a large loan from King Bhoja, saying he would repay it as soon as possible in this lifetime and whatever remained in the next life. In the evening, while returning home, he stayed at an oil miller's house and overheard a conversation between an ox and a bull, as he could understand the language of animals. He learned that both the ox and the bull had taken a loan from the oil miller in their previous birth, and now, with great difficulty, they were repaying it. The merchant, not wanting to carry the burden of repaying the debt in the next life, returned the loan to the king the next day.

ऋणप्रत्यर्पणं कष्टाय

कदाचित् ऊर्ध्वपुण्ड्रधारिणः जटाभिः शोभमानाः दशमिताः विरागिसाधवः चिटिकां विना रेल्यानम् आरूढवन्तः । सर्वेSपि साधवः कारागारं प्रति नेयाः इति चिटिकानिरीक्षदलेन आरक्षिणः आदिष्टाः यतः तेषु असाधवः अपि आसन् केचन । आरक्षकनिरीक्षकः सर्वान् साधून् आहूय - 'ये त्रिपुण्ड्रम् अपसारयेयुः, ये कण्ठे धृतां रुद्राक्षमालां भञ्जयेयुः च तान् कारागारतः मोचयिष्यामः' इति वदति । अष्ट साधवः तथैव कृतवन्तः । किन्तु उभौ साधू तथा कर्तुं सहमतौ न जातौ । तेन ज्ञातं के साधवः असाधवः च इति । तौ द्वौ सधू मोचितौ, अष्ट साधवः बन्धिताः च ।

Once, 10 sages wearing Urdhvapundra and Rudraksha boarded a train without tickets. Since they didn’t have tickets, they were all taken to jail. The inspector called all the sages and said, 'Those who can remove the Urdhvapundra and break the Rudraksha mala, I will release them from jail.' Eight of them agreed to do so. However, two of them did not agree. Thus, it was revealed who were virtuous and non-virtuous. The two virtuous sages were freed, while the eight were imprisoned.

वास्तविकाः साधवः

कदाचित् रामनामजपं कुर्वन्तम् आञ्जनेयं शनिदेवः गर्वेण युद्धाय आह्वयते । गुरुपुत्रेण सह अहं युद्धं न करोमि इति युद्धप्रस्तावननिराकुर्वन्तम् आञ्जनेयं शनिः मुष्ट्या प्रहृतवान् । अनन्यगतिकया आञ्जनेयः स्वपुच्छेन शनिं बद्ध्वा शिलानाम् उपरि गर्तेषु च नीतवान् । शनेः देहः क्षतविक्षतः जातः । शनेः प्रार्थनानन्तरं तं मोचयित्वा, तैलमर्दनेन पीडाम् अपनीतवान् आञ्जनेयः । ततः प्रभृति शनिदेवस्य तैलसमर्पणप्रथा आरब्धा ।

Once, Shanideva invited Hanuman, who was muttering prayers, for a fight. Hanuman declined, saying he would not fight with the son of Surya, who was his Guru. However, Shanideva seized his hands and thrashed him. Left with no other option, Hanuman tied Shani with his tail, carried him to the top of the mountains, and lowered him into the pits, thus injuring him. After much pleading, Hanuman released Shani and relieved him of the pain by applying oil to his wounds. From that moment, the practice of offering oil to Shanideva began.
