세상을 비추는 아이들: The Kids Who Light Our World

어려서부터 예술을 좋아하고 그림에 관심을 가지고 있던 저자는 고등학교 교과과정에서 과거 의 문화와 삶에 대해 알려주는 공공미술에 대해 배우다가 알게된 마야 벽화를 통해 마야의 창 조 신화인 폽부(Pop Wui)를 찾아보게 되고 이것이 한국의 전래동화인 [해와 달이 된 오누이] 와 비슷한 면이 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

“ 지구 반 바퀴나 떨어져 있는 과테말라와 한국의 동화가 공통점을 가지고 있다니 ! ”

이런 놀라움과 호기심이 저자로 하여금 이 책을 쓰도록 만든 시작점이 되었던 것 같습니다. 저자는 이 책을 기획하고 구성하면서 단순히 두 이야기의 비교에서 끝나는 것이 아니라 우리에게 낯설었던 마야문명의 신화에 대해 알려주고 서로 다른 지역의 문화를 비교하여 공통점과 차이점을 생각해 보게 함으로써 다른 사회의 문화와 자기 문화를 올바르게 이해하는 방법을 알려줍니다.

한편으로는 인류가 서로 다른 환경에서 살아가지만 같은 인류의 구성원으로서 보편적인 생각 을 공유할 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 인간이 가질 수 있는 정서가 크게 다르지 않다는 것을 상 기시켜 줍니다.

이념, 종교, 인종 간의 갈등, 성 소수자들에 대한 증오 등으로 분열되어있는 이 세상에서 우 리가 서로를 존중하기 위해 최선을 다한다면, 우리가 가지고 있는 서로의 차이를 이겨내고 이 세상 속에서 평화롭게 공존할 수 있지 않을까요?

이 책을 읽고 아이들이 연주와 환처럼 인종, 종교 지역을 뛰어넘어 친구가 되었으면 합니다. 편견을 버리고 서로의 다름을 인정하고 배려하는 마음을 가져 세상을 비추는 많은 아이들이 나오기를 바랍니다.

The author, who liked art and was interested in painting from an early age, learned public art courses on culture and life in the past when she was in high school. Through this subject, the author learned about Maya murals, became interested in Pop Wuj[Popol Vuh], a Mayan creation myth, and realized that they were similar to Korean traditional fairy tales, [the sun and the moon.]

“‘Wow, Guatemala and Korea\'s fairy tales on opposite sides of the globe have something in common!”

This surprise and curiosity was the starting point for the author to write this book. In planning and organizing this book, the author is not simply comparing the two stories, but telling us about the myths of the Mayan civilization that were unfamiliar to us.

In addition, the author explains readers how to understand cultures correctly by making them think about their commonalities and differences by comparing cultures in different regions. In other words, the author shows that humans live in different environments, but can share universal thoughts as members of the same human society, and reminds us that the emotions humans can have are not very different.

If we do our best to respect each other in a world divided by ideology, religion, ethnic conflict, hatred for sexual minorities, wouldn\'t we be able to overcome our differences and coexist peacefully?

After reading this book, I hope that children will become friends across ethnic and religious, and areas like Yeonjoo and Hwan. Also, I hope that many children will appear in this world with a mind to abandon prejudice, acknowledge each other\'s differences, and care for each other.
