The is an entertaining, very readable book that gives an accurate view of contemporary Havana, its physical, social and political milieu. The very real dilemma faced by many Cubans -- whether to make one's life on the island or leave for better opportunities abroad -- is the focus of this story, and the author does an excellent job of portraying exactly what the stakes are in that choice.

It is an easy read yet stylistically diverse, and it offers vivid Cuban characters, lives, and dilemmas in an environment which U.S. readers will not have seen before.

The author is an award-winner; her first novel, Otras Plegarias Atendidas, won the 2002 Italo Calvino Prize (Italy-Cuba) and the 2004 Cuban Literary Critics’ Prize (one of Cuba's annual two literary awards, and comparable to the National Book Award).
