Getting Married

"Getting Married is a social comedy by George Bernard Shaw that explores the institution of marriage with wit, irony, and intellectual depth. The play unfolds on the morning of a wedding, where what should be a joyful celebration quickly turns into a spirited debate about the legal, moral, and emotional foundations of matrimony.

As the bride and groom hesitate, conversations among family members and guests expose conflicting views on love, commitment, divorce, and personal freedom. Shaw uses the gathering as a platform for examining the practical realities behind romantic ideals. Characters argue over the fairness of marriage laws, the role of religion, and the economic implications of union, revealing anxieties beneath polite social customs.

Rather than focusing on dramatic action, Shaw constructs the play as a lively discussion, rich in philosophical reflection and sharp humor. Through satire, he challenges conventional expectations and questions whether marriage, as structured by society, truly serves the individuals involved.

Getting Married ultimately presents marriage not as a simple romantic destiny but as a social contract requiring honesty, equality, and reform. Shaw's incisive dialogue transforms a domestic occasion into a broader critique of societal norms and institutional rigidity."
