Musical Instruments

Musical Instruments by Carl Engel is a foundational study in the history and ethnology of musical instruments across global civilizations. The work examines the origin, development, cultural symbolism, and structural variety of instruments from both ancient and post-medieval periods. With detailed descriptions and comparisons, Engel brings to light the sonic heritage of diverse cultures, including the Assyrians, Greeks, Chinese, American Indians, and medieval Europeans. This scholarly work serves as a critical contribution to organology (the study of musical instruments), revealing not only technical details but also the philosophical and ceremonial roles of instruments in different societies. Engels approach blends musicology with anthropology, offering rich insight into how instruments shaped and reflected religious rituals, warfare, entertainment, and social identity. Perfect for music historians, ethnomusicologists, and scholars of cultural studies, Musical Instruments remains a classic reference for understanding the global evolution of musical tools and traditions.
