Poor Folk

"Poor Folk" is a poignant and socially conscious novel written by Russian literary giant Fyodor Dostoevsky, first published in 1846. It tells the story of Makar Devushkin, a humble and impoverished civil servant, and Varvara Dobroselova, a young woman from a similarly destitute background. The narrative unfolds through a series of letters exchanged between Makar and Varvara, revealing their struggles with poverty, loneliness, and societal marginalization. Despite their dire circumstances, the protagonists find solace and connection in their correspondence, forming a deep bond of friendship and mutual support. Through the intimate portrayal of Makar and Varvara's lives, Dostoevsky offers a searing critique of the dehumanizing effects of poverty and the oppressive social structures that perpetuate it. "Poor Folk" stands as a testament to Dostoevsky's empathetic portrayal of the human condition and his unwavering commitment to shedding light on the plight of the marginalized and disenfranchised in society.
