Romulus

Romulus is Jacob Abbott's "Makers of History" series explores the legendary founding of Rome through the life of its first king, Romulus. First published in 1852, the biography serves as an introduction to Roman history, blending ancient mythology, folklore, and early historical records. Abbott reconstructs the semi-mythological era of early Italy, guiding readers through the dramatic stories that shaped the foundation of the Roman Empire. The narrative covers the legendary origins of Rome and the consolidation of its early power: The Cadence of Early Italy: The book opens with the ancient geography of Italy and the background of Alba Longa, setting the political stage before Rome existed. The Wolf and the Twins: Abbott recounts the famous legend of Romulus and his twin brother, Remus, their abandonment in the Tiber River, their miraculous survival by a she-wolf, and their upbringing by shepherds. The Foundation of Rome: The narrative details the building of the city walls on the Palatine Hill, the fierce argument between the brothers, and the tragic death of Remus at the hands of Romulus. The Asylum and the Outlaws: To populate his new city, Romulus opens Rome as an asylum for fugitives, outlaws, and runaway slaves, creating a rough and fiercely loyal community. The Rape of the Sabine Women: Abbott explores the famous conflict where the early Romans, lacking wives, abduct women from the neighboring Sabine tribe during a festival, which leads to a massive war. The Union and the Disappearance: The book finishes with the peace treaty that united the Romans and Sabines under joint rule, Romulus's long reign, and his mysterious disappearance during a violent storm, leading Romans to believe he ascended to heaven as the god Quirinus.
