In these striking character studies, Kelli Deeth’s characters are primarily women in that period between the end of youth and the onset of middle age – characters who find themselves facing the responsibilities of adulthood while bearing the consequences of having made bad choices in their lives. In the story “The Things They Said,” a couple is on a road trip from Ontario to Colorado to attend a funeral; in hotels along the way, they grapple with their decision to remain childless as they struggle to maintain what drew them together in the first place. In “Sis,” a woman from Winnipeg with perennial financial problems decides to travel to Toronto to visit her stepbrother, from whom she hopes to borrow money but finds herself caught up in his domestic troubles. And in “Vera’s Room,” a woman’s marriage is tested as she tries to bond with her newly adopted 7-year-old daughter. Kelli Deeth published her acclaimed first short-story collection, The Girl without Anyone (HarperCollins Canada), in 2001, which was named one The Globe and Mail's best Canadian books of the year. (It received a limited release in the US.) This is her first book in 12 years.
