While this opening novel to the series doesn’t quite reach the height that Mr. Reeve’s Mortal Engines book does - it is still a cracking good read. Philip Reeves has the remarkable ability to make a silly idea (trains traveling between space and worlds, cities on tracks devouring other cities) read absolutely believable, and his adventure stories are always exciting, charming, and filled with memorable main and side characters.And while this book ends up to be another heist book - a very tried and somewhat tired plot device in YA - his story still packs enough originality and depth to it to draw readers in.Extra points must be given for it’s use of representation, among which: a mostly non-white main cast, a male character that once had a husband, and androids that can change their gender at will, because: “wouldn’t you if you could?”So great representation for those that are looking for it…A solid four stars from me!
