This is now my fourth Neil Gaiman novel, and I’m starting to notice a pattern…First off: his writing is a joy to read. It flows beautifully, it’s precise, and not overly florid. BUT… He clearly has a thing for passive protagonists, and that is starting to irritate me. They just get dragged along by magical beings without actually doing a whole lot themselves. This unfortunately makes for somewhat bland characters, and boring reading. He is also a pantser writer (someone who writes by the seat of their pants) and it really shows! His plots tend to go all over the place, and his endings are often anticlimactic and the worst parts of the books…Here it is no different. I did however really enjoy how he worked his own youthful experiences directly into a somewhat bittersweet fairy tale.Overal not a bad book, but not great either..He seems like a nice guy however, and his narration here adds a personal touch and is nice to listen to!

What an amazing story. Unbelievable… Neil is such an original writer. I actually found this book because I watched The Sandman on Netflix and got inspired by the incredible storytelling.

This is my fourth Neil Gamen novel in a row, and I don’t know if it is maybe because I am comparing it to the others or because I am getting used to the patterns in his writing but it was not entirely my cup of tea. It wasn’t clear for me if this is a children’s book or book for adults. There ware waaay to many metaphors and loong passages of like nothing happening. There is no real conclusion to the story or morale behind it. That said, of course still admiring his imagination and Neil is just a FANTASTIC narrator.

Heel mooi verhaal. Dromerig maar niet vaag. Avontuurlijk, maar niet heldhaftig. Gevoelig, maar niet emotioneel. Echt heel goed!Enige feedback puntje: te kort ☺️

This book is so cleverly written! Also the narration makes the book and the character(s) come to life. I really recommend listening to the podcast interview with the author at the end of the audiobook to find out more about the clever way Neil wrote the book!
