Goodreads Choice Award for Best Science Fiction Novel
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is a masterful epic science fiction novel from the New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of the Inheritance Cycle, Christopher Paolini.
Kira Navárez dreamed of life on new worlds Now she’s awakened a nightmare
During a routine survey mission on an uncolonized planet, Kira finds an alien relic. At first she’s delighted, but elation turns to terror when the ancient dust around her begins to move.
As war erupts among the stars, Kira is launched into a galaxy-spanning odyssey of discovery and transformation. First contact isn’t at all what she imagined, and events push her to the very limits of what it means to be human.
While Kira faces her own horrors, Earth and its colonies stand upon the brink of annihilation. Now, Kira might be humanity’s greatest and final hope . . .

Interesting ideas, bad execution. I really liked the central ideas, in particular the gray goo suit worn by the main character, and all the potential plot options it offers (but which are not really explored). However, at many times I was left frustrated by the mindlessness of the characters, and the idiotic decisions they made. The combat scenes are too long while at the same time lacking detail and realism. I may be a bit spoiled by Ryk Brown's Frontier Saga, but this really is the other side of the spectrum in terms of idiotic tactical decisions. I mean, who puts an 'away team' on a potential hostile planet without any air/space support, unless they want the team to stay 'away' forever? Next to badly excuted combat scenes, many plot elements are introduced, and then forgotten about. And just when you thought the story was picking up again after 25 hours, the story ends, becuase the final 3 hours are addendums. Waste of time this one!

Sorry. Gave it a real good try and got halfway through but in all honesty after Eragon it went down hill.
