Deuteronomy means "second law", and in this book, the laws given to the Israelite people by Moses are re-stated and renewed for the second generation who were allowed to enter the Promised Land. This is the final book of the Torah and was primarily authored by Moses, although the last chapters relate the transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua, and Moses' death atop Mt. Nebo. Throughout Deuteronomy, the prominent hope of a second chance, and a renewal of their covenant with God, reassures the Israelites that they will not repeat the sins of their forefathers.
