In Empire of Gold: A History of the Byzantine Empire, esteemed university professor Thomas F. Madden offers a fascinating series of lectures on the history of the remarkable culture and state that developed out of the ancient Roman Empire, particularly its eastern portion, throughout the Middle Ages. The story here therefore begins at an ending, that of the Roman Empire, in the third century AD, and continues over the next one thousand years. This new culture arising from the old will have a dramatic impact on western European culture and on the culture of the Islamic East, and most especially on the culture and modern history of Greeks, Greek Orthodox, and Russians, who were all very much affected by the Byzantine Empire. With incisive commentary, Professor Madden leads a discussion covering Justinian's reconquest of the West, the great city of Constantinople, and the aftermath and influence of this extraordinary empire.

Professor Maddens Byzantine History has 14 good lectures for modern history students. But he is sometimes much too superficial in the traditional main period: 500-1204 AD.For example: Madden just jumps from Heraclius 610-641 - to Leo III 717-741 ! Without even mentioning important emperors with long-ruling periods - like Constans II, Costantine IV, Justinian II, and Tiberius III !After the sack of Constantinopel in 1204, until its fall in 1453 AD - professor Madden is unforgiveably super-detailed. I think this period is a little boring and unintersting - and quite unimportant for modern students - as it has always been for most ancient-history-lovers.It is like writing the general story of the Western Roman Empire - and give most of the time, pages and energi - to the soldier-emperors - some few decades in the middle of the third century. That could be interesting in a more specialiced-book - not in the General History of an Empire! But Madden is very good in the periods he like!
