Months after Inara leaves Serenity, Mal and the crew finally learn the reason for her sudden departure: she is dying of a terminal illness. It is Kiehl’s Myeloma, a form of cancer that’s supposedly incurable, and Inara has very little time left.

Through their shock and despair, rumors of a cure reach the crew. Expert Esau Weng is said to have developed a means to treat Inara’s condition, but he has been disgraced and incarcerated for life on a notorious Alliance prison planet.

On Atata planet, inmates are abandoned with no guards and left to survive as best they can. What’s more, terraforming the planet did not take properly, so the world is a frozen wasteland. To save Inara, the Serenity crew must infiltrate the prison…

NervepirrendeThis is one of Lovegrove’s better attempts at capturing the magic that is firefly. Though slow to start the plot is interesting and feels fresh. I rather enjoyed the worldbuilding in this one. The prison planet is a cool setting. Though making Inara sick feels a little cliche considering her profession. As always his characterisation is hit or miss, He did most of the crew good this time, but he writes River too sane and a little too close to psychic for my liking. And Mal was fine until his last conversation with Inara (Spoiler alert) he has been incapable of telling her his feelings up to this point, there is no way he’d propose. Moreover the ending between them doesn’t mesh with the timeline, the seemed to be at odds at the beginning of serenity, but this doesn’t lend itself to that. Though it fixes some continuity issues too, like River instantly becoming the pilot after the movie, that makes more sense with this story. Overall it’s a good effort.
