With detailed descriptions and comparisons, Engel brings to light the sonic heritage of diverse cultures, including the Assyrians, Greeks, Chinese, American Indians, and medieval Europeans. This scholarly work serves as a critical contribution to organology (the study of musical instruments), revealing not only technical details but also the philosophical and ceremonial roles of instruments in different societies.
