#1 I wrote an autobiography that was focused on the way I had been shaped by movements and campaigns in communities of struggle. I did not want to write a conventional autobiography in which the heroic subject offers lessons to readers.
#2 The American canon of literature has been contested before, and if one considers the autobiography of Malcolm X, which has clearly made its way into the canon, it is not clear whether the inclusion of oppositional writing has really made a difference.
#3 While I was in prison, I wrote a paper for the Society for the Study of Dialectical Materialism, which was associated with the American Philosophical Association, entitled Women and Capitalism: Dialectics of Oppression and Liberation.
#4 I draw from my background in philosophy to ask questions about contemporary and historical realities that are otherwise foreclosed. I draw particular inspiration from Herbert Marcuse's work Counterrevolution and Revolt, which attempts to directly theorize political developments of the late 1960s.
