A relatively short story makes it so there isn't enough world building within the first book. The fact that there is too much of stuff to happen in the first book in so few pages, means that scenes that are suppose to be mysterious and exciting, gets resolved within just a few minutes. This also results in characters to become stereotypes of them selves. There isn't enough time spent on who people are and their personalities. It also sounds like the writer is forcing a romantic relationship between the main character and the girl. There's obvioulsy nothing wrong with a little romance in this series, and some people really are obsessed with how they look and that they are liked by other people. But even within the first meeting, the main girl insists upon the main boy that he had to leave a romantic relationship when moving to this new city, and she acts jealous about it and sort of insists on how she now is the only girl he has to like. This is terrible writing.
