Totally Smashed!

You are looking at Finland’s most shameless cult classic of crude humor!

Totally Smashed! tells the story of an alcoholic’s crusade toward a more responsible life. Published almost 30 years ago, this riotous novel launched The Hangover Diaries, a series that changed the world, or at least transformed the way hundreds of thousands of readers thought about literature.

The Hangover Diaries throws readers straight into the chaotic world of Juha Berg, a guy who constantly wavers between being drunk and hungover. Right from the start, we are plunged into Juha’s outrageous life and into the peculiar way Finns seem determined to drink themselves sober.

Juha prefers to settle disputes with his fists, enjoys casual sex, and, of course, alcohol. He funds his drinking by any means necessary, even by collecting and returning empty bottles. But then Juha falls head over heels in love with Tiina, the leader of an AA group, and their relationship quickly becomes serious. Complicating matters are Juha’s best friend Kristian and Mikael, a self-proclaimed expert on German erotica. With Cupid’s arrow firmly lodged in his heart, Juha is forced to make some life-changing choices. But how far can things go before only one solution remains?

The crude humor of The Hangover Diaries series has won over all kinds of readers. Juha Vuorinen is the most popular author among Finnish prisoners, and the books in the series rank among the most frequently stolen from public libraries.

Juha Vuorinen (b. 1967) is an author, radio and television journalist, director, screenwriter, and producer. He has become widely recognized as the irreverent voice of the people, known for his brazen and grotesque sense of humor.

Vuorinen’s literary career took off with the hugely popular blog The Hangover Diaries (Juoppohullun päiväkirja), which soon evolved into a bestselling book series and an all-time favorite among Finnish readers. To date, he has published more than forty works, which have also been released in Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. The Hangover Diaries series alone has sold millions of copies in Finland. Its first installment remains one of the bestselling Finnish books of all time and has also been adapted into a feature film.
