He was Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in London. He is considered the pre-eminent representative of the metaphysical poets. b.1572 d.1631 Thomas Carew was an English poet, among the 'Cavalier' group of Caroline poets. b.1595 d.1640 John Wilmot was an English poet and courtier of King Charles II's Restoration court. The Restoration reacted against the "spiritual authoritarianism" of the Puritan era. Rochester embodied this new era, and he became as well known for his rakish lifestyle as his poetry, although the two were often interlinked. b.1647 d.1680
