#1 I am in a small dark room, and I am always cold. I am hungry, and my stomach makes strange growling noises. I am scared of what comes next and my heart starts to thump.

#2 I was often given my foster mother’s special medicine. It was like a large green jelly bean, and she would force it into my mouth. I had to swallow it or she would get angry.

#3 I lived with my parents, Barbara and William, in Oxford. I was adopted in 1968, and Barbara told me that my real mother threw me away, so she took me in and I should be grateful. I knew I was lucky that Barbara and Ian had taken me in.

#4 Barbara was a late starter in life, and had been a nanny to a local well-to-do family. She had a big family from whom she was largely estranged. She had a casual arrangement with a neighbor that she would take in his son while he was on the road.
