Hilton Head Island's Haunted Lighthouse | Encore Episode

In the early morning hours of December 31, 1862, Union Colonel Julius Peter Garesché was decapitated by a Confederate cannonball during the Battle of Stones River. His violent death—foretold in ominous warnings and eerie family prophecies—would soon echo in more ways than one. For in the decades since, visitors to the battlefield in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, have claimed to see a headless figure in blue silently riding the mist-covered glades near the site of his fall.

But who was Colonel Garesché? And how did his tragic story become entwined with one of America’s oldest ghost story archetypes—the Headless Horseman?

In this episode, we explore the origins of Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the centuries-old folklore that inspired it, and the chilling real-life legend that grew out of the blood-soaked fields of Middle Tennessee. Introducing: The Dark Histories Podcast

On the west side of Kingsport, Tennessee is Rotherwood, an old antebellum mansion overlooking the spot where the two forks of the Holston river come together. Today this red brick structure is privately owned, but according to local lore, it is home to more than just the living.
For the last half a century, stories have placed at least two spirits on the ground of Rotherwood Mansion. First is the beautiful “Lady in White,” Rowena Ross who is forever searching for her lost love who died before they had a chance to marry. Second is the notorious Joshua Phipps who is said to have delighted in the torture of his enslaved workforce and ultimately died a horrifying death. But what is the truth behind the legends of Rotherwood, we may never know.

The Cavalier Hotel's Haunted History

On the morning on February 9, 1960, a milkman pulled up to a small bridge over Turkey Creek, near Morrison, Colorado and quickly grew agitated by what sat in front of him. The bridge was blocked by an idling station wagon. The man honked his truck’s horn several times, hoping to alert the car’s driver of his presence and get him to clear the way, but after continued attempts, it was to no avail. Frustrated as can be, the milkman then hopped out of his truck and walked over to the vehicle, which he discovered was empty. Little did he realize that he had just discovered the car of Adolph Coors III, heir to the Coors brewing empire, who had been kidnapped from that bridge over Turkey Creek. What followed was the largest search and manhunt since the Lindbergh baby kidnapping.

The Failed Kidnapping of Adolph Coors III | Minisode

The Singing River of Pascagoula

In 1926 Conley Snidow opened the Lake Shawnee Amusement Park in West Virginia, on land that many believe was once sacred to the indigenous tribes of the region. Echoes of the land's subsequent bloody history and the park's tragic demise are said to still resonate there today.
