De tempelorde werd in 1120 opgericht om de pelgrims in het Heilige Land te beschermen. De tempelridders waren gevreesde krijgers en ontpopten zich tot grootgrondbezitters en bankiers. In 1312 werd de grootste religieuze ridderorde ooit ontbonden op bevel van Filips IV de Schone van Frankrijk. Vele tempeliers werden geëxecuteerd. Minder bekend is het belang van de Lage Landen als logistieke en financiële draaischijf van de tempelorde. Jan Hosten vertelt over de Vlaamse roots van de tempeliers, hun activiteiten en commanderijen in de Lage Landen en de restanten van dat patrimonium.
