Cathy Glass novels all have a focus. This one is about how hard it is to get a child to open up. But it also exposes the difficulty in fostering where you don’t get to make the decision about how much freedom a foster child is allowed. Even when they are known to police and engaged in criminal, destructive and dangerous behaviour. There’s something clunky in the UK legal system where if a child is out of control, they must be allowed to continue to spiral until they hit some endpoint where they end up in custody.
