Shampoo and Mortar: A Pilot Sitcom

"Shampoo and Mortar" is a British sitcom set in Durham featuring newlyweds Dave Thompson (27), a paranoid bricklayer, and Sharon Thompson (25), a mobile hairdresser. The pilot episode explores themes of jealousy, self-worth, and personal transformation through Jimmy Carr-style observational humor.

Dave's insecurities spiral when Sharon regularly visits Marcus, an accountant with "lovely hair," leading him to suspect an affair. Meanwhile, Adam Mitchell (21), a confident Black apprentice on Dave's construction site, develops a crush on the oblivious Dave and begins boosting his confidence with genuine compliments about his looks and skills. Adam possesses Marigold-like qualities - he's articulate, socially aware, and uses intelligence and charm to challenge people's preconceptions while helping them grow.

Dave completely misses Adam's obvious flirtations, interpreting them as friendly workplace support. When Sharon discovers Adam's attraction to Dave, she's delighted rather than threatened, finding it ironic that Dave worries about Marcus (who poses no real threat) while remaining clueless about his actual admirer. Sharon playfully teases Dave about the situation, helping him realize that being attractive to others is flattering rather than threatening to their marriage.

The comedy escalates as Dave's newfound confidence, sparked by Adam's attention and progressive thinking, transforms him from a paranoid, insecure husband into someone who finally feels worthy of Sharon's love. This leads to an honest conversation between Dave and Adam, where they establish a genuine friendship based on mutual respect and clear boundaries.
