#2 On July 11, 1908, the heatwave that had been plaguing the entire state of New York reached Sand Lake, a small town in the middle of Rensselaer County. It was oppressively hot. People slept in parks or on rooftops to escape the heat, and two men tried to kill their wives with carving knives.

#3 Averill Park was the last stop on the Troy and New England Railway trolley line, which was the only means of public transportation into the village. It was a popular destination for summer visitors from Troy and Albany, who came to enjoy the town’s recreational attractions.

#4 On July 10, a teenager named Lawrence Gruber saw a body in Teal’s Pond near the Taborton woods. It was a harrowing sight, but mesmerizing: they couldn’t look away.
