#1 Dean Corll was the first child born to Mary Robinson and Arnold Edwin Corll. His parents divorced when he was young, and his mother married a traveling clock salesman named Jake West. His stepfather thought he might be gay, but Mary said he was loyal, obedient, helpful, and a good normal boy.

#2 In 1964, Corll was drafted into the US Army, and he attended basic training in Fort Polk, Louisiana. He later ended up in Fort Hood, Texas, working as a radio repairman. He applied for a hardship discharge, saying his mother needed him to work in the family business. He received an honorable discharge less than a year after entering the military.
