#1 The most common understanding of Jesus’s death is that it was a substitutionary sacrifice, meaning that he died for the sins of the world. However, this is not the only Christian understanding of Jesus’s death.

#2 The story of Jesus’s death is often heard as a composite of the gospels and the New Testament as a whole. We must set aside these filters if we want to hear Mark’s story.

#3 Mark’s gospel is the earliest account of the crucifixion, and it is not difficult to see why. The followers of Jesus in the years and decades after his death sought to see meaning in the horrific execution of their beloved master.

#4 The chief priests, elders, and scribes convened and decided to execute Jesus. They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate, who asked him if he was the King of the Jews. Jesus did not reply, so Pilate was amazed.
