One of the disciples, eager to collect the leaves, stems, and roots, was stopped by Charaka, who said that permission must be obtained from the owner of the field before collecting the plants. When the disciple mentioned that there was a royal order that no permission was needed for collecting plants for the benefit of the people, the teacher explained, "Royal orders are one thing, but proper conduct is another. Accepting something belonging to someone else without permission is improper conduct." With these words, he taught how our conduct and behavior should be governed by ethical principles.
