Story of Ekalavya

Ekalavya is a character from the epic The Mahabharata. He was a young prince of the Nishadha, a confederation of jungle tribes in Ancient India. Ekalavya is called as one of the foremost of Kings in the Rajasuya Yagya where he honours Yudhishthira by offering shoes with respect. Though he did not have his right thumb, he was noted as a very powerful archer and warrior. In the Mahabharata, Ekalavya was the son of Hiranyadhanus, the chief of Nishada. He served under King Jarasandha's army as General. His father Hiranyadhanu was the commander of the most powerful king of the period, Jarasandha. Ekalavya held an indomitable will to master the art of archery. He once stayed hidden in the forest while guru Drona was teaching the Kaurava and Pandava brothers. After they had left for the ashram, Ekalavya collected the mud on which his Guru walked, as a symbolic gesture of reverence for his Guru's knowledge and footsteps. He went into the forest and fashioned a statue of Drona under a big old well-grown tree. He began a disciplined program of self-study over many years. Accepting the statue as his guru, he practised before it every single day.

ஏகலைவன் மகாபாரதக் கதாபாத்திரங்களுள் ஒருவன். மகத நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த இவன் பிறப்பினால் ஒரு வேடன் (நிஷாதன்). அவன் இருந்த இடம் அஸ்தினாபுரத்திற்கு அருகில் இருந்தது. வில் வித்தையில் தேர்ந்தவனாக வர எண்ணினான். துரோணர் தான் சிறந்த குரு என்று தெரிந்து கொண்டு அவரிடம் சென்று தனக்கு வில் வித்தையைக் கற்றுத் தருமாறு வேண்டினான். தான் சத்திரியர்களுக்கு மட்டுமே கற்றுக் கொடுப்பதால், அதை வெளிக்காட்டாமல், ஏராளமான சீடர்களுக்குப் பயிற்சி அளிப்பதால் தனக்கு நேரமில்லை என்று சொல்லி திருப்பி அனுப்பிவிட்டார். பிறகு நான் எப்படி இதைக் கற்றுக்கொள்வது என்று துரோணரிடமே கேட்டான். "உனக்கு என்மீது நம்பிக்கை இருந்தால் நீ எங்கிருந்தாலும் கற்றுக்கொள்வாய்" என்று அனுப்பிவிட்டார். ஏகலைவன் அவர் வார்த்தைகளை முழுமையாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு, தனது இருப்பிடத்திற்கு திரும்பித் துரோணரைப் போல ஒரு சிலையை செய்தான், அந்தச் சிலையை குருவாகக் கருதிக்கொண்டு பயிற்சியை மேற்கொண்டான். ஒரு நாள் பயிற்சியில் ஏகலைவன் துரோணரின் சிலைக்கு முன்பாக மிகவும் சிரத்தையோடு வில் வித்தை கற்றுக்கொண்டிருந்தான், அப்போது ஒரு நாய் குரைக்கும் சத்தம் கேட்டது. அவன் கவனம் சிதறியது, குரைப்புச் சத்தம் வந்த திக்கை நோக்கி அம்புகளை எய்தான், அம்புகள் எல்லாம் நாயின் வாயைச் சுற்றித் தைத்து குரைக்க முடியாதபடி செய்தது. நாய் அருச்சுனனை நோக்கி ஓடியது. நாயைக் கண்ட அருச்சுனன் அதை இழுத்துக் கொண்டு போய் துரோணரிடம் காண்பித்து "உலகிலேயே மிகச் சிறந்த வில் வீரனாக ஆக்குவேன் என்றீர்கள், இந்த அற்புதத்தைச் செய்தவன் நிச்சயம் என்னைவிடச் சிறந்தவனாக இருக்க வேண்டும். இது எப்படி சாத்தியம்" என்று துரோணரிடம் அருச்சுனன் கேட்டான். இத்தகைய சிறப்புமிக்க ஏகலைவன்பற்றி பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் கு.ஞானசம்பந்தன் விரிவாக விவரிக்கிறார் கேட்டு மகிழுங்கள்.
