Passing

Nella Larsen’s Passing is a powerful novel of identity, race, friendship, and social expectations in 1920s Harlem. As the two women’s lives become intertwined, Larsen explores the pressures of identity, marriage, class, desire, and belonging. Their friendship grows increasingly complicated as secrets and conflicting loyalties emerge, leading toward an ambiguous and unsettling climax.
