He embarks on a journey southward and eventually joins a regiment stationed in mountainous Cossack country, where he takes part in the daily life of a Cossack village and encounters cultural tensions between the Russian troops and the local Cossacks, who have a complex relationship marked by historical enmity.

Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, and social reformer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time.
