Basic Bahasa Indonesian: An Introductory Language Course

Basic Bahasa Indonesian is designed to introduce complete beginners to the Indonesian language, through the standard Bahasa dialect. Throughout the five sessions, then emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension skills. Indonesian, or Bahasa Indonesia as it is locally known, serves as the official language of Indonesia. It is a standardized form of Malay and was officially adopted in 1945 when Indonesia declared its independence from Dutch colonial rule.

As a result, Indonesian has evolved into a dynamic language that absorbs and incorporates elements from local languages as well as foreign languages such as Arabic, Dutch, and English.
