Terror & Suspense
Tom Wallace lived an ordinary life, until a chance event awakened psychic abilities he never knew he possessed. Now, he’s hearing the private thoughts of the people around him—and learning shocking secrets he never wanted to know. But as Tom’s existence becomes a waking nightmare, even greater jolts are in store, as he becomes the unwilling recipient of a compelling message from beyond the grave.
This eerie ghost story, by the award-winning author of Hell House and I Am Legend, inspired the acclaimed 1999 film starring Kevin Bacon. Though originally published in the 1950s, its themes and ideas remain as fresh as if it were written today.

This book was so dull, I only finished reading it because my stubbornness stops me from not completing a task once I’ve started it.The characters were flat, one-dimensional, and it was so hard to relate to any of them, or even like them. Tom was okay, and I felt kinda sorry for him... I was sort of angry at Ann for not being understanding regarding the things he was going through. I mean, I could barely get why she was so upset and hurt regarding Tom’s situation.Anyways, the suspense and paranormal in this book are, theoretically, the main theme as the plot thickens — except the plot never thickens and the book never gets interesting. It’s not suspenseful, it’s not exciting, it doesn’t really elicit anything from me as a reader. To sum it up, this is actually the first book by Matheson that I put my hands on, mostly because I’m such a fan of the movie starring Kevin Bacon. This book feels like the skeleton of that movie, and nothing more.
