A Duergar army lies hidden in the depths below the city . . . but Bernt is more worried about finding an affordable rental that accepts demon familiars.

To make things worse, his day job isn't getting any easier. With the Underkeepers promoted to the city guard, Bernt is now on the first line of defense against the growing incursion. The danger is greater than ever . . . but with more risks come even better rewards.

For Jori, his demon familiar, growing in power brings unexpected consequences. As long-buried secrets behind her origins surface, she'll have to outmaneuver the city's Solicitors before they strip away her freedom for good.

Whatever comes, Bernt is up to the challenge and ready to put his first investiture as a mage to the test. The city might consider them expendable, but the Underkeepers are used to being underestimated.

And hey, at least Bernt might finally get his hands on some proper gear . . .
