Excerpt: When Sally Henderson married her husband, Barry, some two years earlier, she was convinced that her future happiness was insured. For one thing, Barry, at the age of thirty-five, had pushed himself into the ranks of a senior partner of a top law firm in downtown Los Angeles. They moved into a beautiful suburban household on top of a hill overlooking the San Fernando Valley. Her financial worries were at an end. The time that she met him, she had been working as a cocktail waitress, constantly worrying about how good tips would be on a particular evening, fretting about the long hours.
