Before the 2022/23 season, SSC Napoli and Luciano Spalletti were considered two of Italy's great underachievers. The club had not won a league title since Diego Maradona led them to glory in 1990. Spalletti had won respect across a three-decade managerial career but did not have a Serie A winner's medal to his name.
